How To Start A Blog In Malaysia?

How to start a blog in Malaysia? In this article, I’m going to show you exactly how you can start a blog under RM250 per year and generate over USD$25,000 with a blog.

If this sounds too good to be true, it is not.

I will share with you my exact earnings I had generated in 2019 and how you can replicate the exact same success like I do.

Let us start with a quick introduction on myself and a table of content.

    Table of Contents

    Who Is Reginald Chan?

Born and raised in Malaysia, Reginald started blogging back in 2004. It all started as a leisure hobby and turned out to be a full-fledged business that made me not only financially independent,

I was given the opportunity to become a TEDx speaker and other speaking and coaching gigs around the world.

And now, I want to focus my time with my fellow Malaysians. This guide, How To Start A Blog In Malaysia [The ULTIMATE Guide] is just one part of it!

How Much Can You Earn As A Blogger In Malaysia?

I love Malaysia (KeranaMu Malaysia) and I love the conversion rates even more. As a blogger, I work with overseas brands, mainly in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. This allows me to enjoy a higher payout, one which deem to be ‘cheap’ for foreigners.

As a blogger in Malaysia, it is rather hard to get money transferred to our local bank accounts (Strip is STILL not available in Malaysia). So my only options are PayPal and Payoneer.

Here’s my earning from PayPal for the year 2019.

    Blog Earnings In 2019

I made $17,299 and after conversion from USD to MYR, I made approximately RM69,368.99 (with the conversion rate 4.01). On average, I make around RM5,780.75 per month from blogging alone.

Let’s see how much I made through blogging in 2020 (report taken was from 1st January to 13th March 2020).

    Blog Earnings In 2020

I made $4,366 and after conversion, I made approximately RM17,900.60 (with the conversion rate of 4.1). Not bad, huh?

How Do I Make Money From Blogging?

One of my primary blogs generates over 150,000 views and with over 100,000 unique per month. With this stats, I started reaching out to companies to either collaborate in writing reviews or publishing promotions for them. This is where your make money blogging kicks in!

    But wait!

You might be a blogger (already) and your thoughts that “it is really tough”.

Yes, you are right. It is not easy to make money but it is not impossible.

Carry on reading to find out how I do that (and all you need is to copy and paste).

Setting Up Your Blog For Success

How To Setup A Blog For Success

The first step of making money with a blog in Malaysia is to set up your blog for success. This means that you start by choosing the right platform to blog with.

I know many bloggers in Malaysia who go with Blogspot, but the trick here is NOT to use Blogspot.

If you want to make money with blogging in Malaysia, you need to build a strong brand name for yourself (and your blog).

    Let’s face this.

Most of us (not only Malaysians) are visually convinced. This means that if website visitors will have more trust in you if they land in a well-designed blog.

Website development can be fairly expensive (costs around RM1,000 to RM5,000 per project). But, here’s the cheaper option to start a blog in Malaysia.

    Follow this steps.

Step 1: Get a domain name AND a web hosting service

    Get A Blog Domain Name

Choose a blog name and next, subscribe for a web hosting service. At this point of writing, Exabytes is offering an awesome 15% discount on .com domains (RM53.46 per year) and premium WordPress hosting at only RM 16 per month.

    Let’s do some math.

    • Domain = RM53.46 per year
    • Web hosting = RM16 per year
    • Total investment = RM245.46 per year

To be honest with you, investing RM245.46 per year is really low compared to what you can potentially earn in return. For example, one of my website is hosted on Exabytes SSD VPS (Plesk SSD VPS) that costs around RM6,000 a year. I am willing to spend such value because the amount I am generating from the blog surpasses what I had invested in.

If Exabytes is not your cup of tea, you can consider using BlueHost hosting that comes with domain and web hosting at $3 per month (really, really affordable for beginners). Click here to try BlueHost.

Step 2: Setting Up Your WordPress Blog

How To Setup A WordPress In Malaysia

The next step is important. Every successful blog has:

    • Professional layout/design works
    • Landing pages
    • Contact us page
    • Categories
    • Newsletter sign up form

Here’s how to setup your WordPress blog in Malaysia without spending more money.

Free WordPress Theme. There are many free WordPress themes that you can download directly from the WordPress repository. I recommend you to install WordPress themes created by WordPress themselves. For example, the Twenty Twenty theme.

Premium WordPress Theme. If you are affordable, using a premium WordPress theme helps you to create beautiful WordPress themes that are unique to your brand. Plus, it also removes the hassle of trying to modify or customize the theme as most premium WordPress themes come with drag and drop builder. Two popular options are Thrive Themes and Divi Theme.

Plugins. WordPress plugins are used to ensure that you can enjoy several advanced features without using a single line of code. There are several essential plugins that you should be using. Here is the list:

Step 3: Decide The Type Of Content To Publish

Publish A Blog Post In Malaysia

This is a crucial step. You need to determine the type of content you are going to publish on your blog. Of course, you would have a strong idea on the overall/general niche.

Therefore, I’m not going down with the route that you should do go for the best paying niche because if it is a niche that you don’t have interest in, you are not going to perform well.

The best way to find a topic that you are interested in and build content topics around it.

This steps involves doing some keyword research for SEO.

How To Do Keyword Research Properly For Your Blog?

    1. Use SEO tools to search for keywords with low competition keywords
    2. Focus on general keywords with has large number of searches
    3. Using the same keyword, add other forms of ‘multipliers’ such as best, top, cheap and location

For example, the term “paintball boots” garners thousands of searches each month.

By focusing on a specific keyword such as “best paintball boots for beginners” or “cheap paintball boots under $50” will help your blog post ranks fast and higher on search engines.

What is the best SEO tool for bloggers in Malaysia?

Most SEO tools are charged in USD (thus, it is like 4x more expensive). But SEO tools are important if you want to rank well in blogging.

Here are the best SEO tools I had used and I highly recommend you to check them out:

Not sure how to use them? Here are two resources for you.

Bonus: Before hitting the publish button, make sure you use free grammar checker to check on your blog post content. For this, I use Grammarly and by far, it is the best (for value) in the market.

    Step 4: Get Google Adsense

Make Money Blogging In Malaysia With Adsense

When you first start your blog, you won’t get much traffic and Google Adsense won’t be much help.

    BUT …

You still need to install Google Adsense to ensure that you are keeping every opportunity to monetize your blog available.

A blogger makes a lot of money from Google Adsense when the blog is generating over 100,000 visits a month. Plus, you stand higher chance to earn better earnings if majority of the blog traffic comes from United States, United Kingdom or Europe.

Google Adsense is great because for a Malaysian, the exchange rate from USD to MYR is very good.

How much you earn is based on the industry you are in. For example, if you are blogging about financials and banking, you stand a higher chance to earn more money (few dollars per click) compared to the blogging niche (under one dollar per click).

    Step 5: Affiliate Marketing

Malaysian Bloggers Make Money With Affiliate Marketing

If you are a blogger in Malaysia and want to make some money online, affiliate marketing is definitely the way to go.

Affiliate marketing is a term used by bloggers who promote certain products on their blogs. It can range from reviews, advertising banners and many others.

You only get paid for every sale you make.

Affiliate marketing is my top method of generating thousands of dollars each month with minimum effort.

How to find the best affiliate marketing for your niche?

Head over to Google and type this into the search column: “your general keyword” + affiliate program.

The approval process could be a pain the ass for some companies, but trust me, it is worth the time!

I recommend you to work with overseas companies because of the conversion rates.

Same amount of work = Higher earnings

    Step 6: Create Newsletter

Use Newsletter To Earn Money As A Malaysian Blogger

Last but not least, keeping your website visitors is an important step for bloggers.

With Google algorithm keep changing, it is challenging to constantly be on the top of the search ranking.

So, how to start a newsletter campaign as a Malaysian blogger?

    Let’s be honest.

The best email marketing solution is charged in USD and it is really expensive for Malaysians (especially when you are just starting to become a bloggers).

Your answer is to use MailChimp. MailChimp offers free email marketing up to 2,000 email subscribers and and 10,000 email deliveries per month.

While I use MailChimp for some of my smaller blogs, it is important to understand that affiliate marketing is not allowed in MailChimp. This means that you cannot promote products using MailChimp if you have no affiliation to them.

I use AWeber for all my blogs and I totally love it. It may not be the cheapest in town, but it is by far the most reliable one that I have tested so far! Click here for free 30-days trial (no credit card required).

    Step 7: Finding Opportunities

Find For Opportunity To Make Money Online Malaysia

The last step involves finding opportunities to make money for your blog.

Starting a blog in Malaysia and making money from blogging requires you to be constantly aware of the opportunities that arise.

For example, if you have a blog with high number of visitors (more than 50,000 visits per month), you need to focus more on ways to monetize your blog.

This means that you need to find for other options that will help you make more money with the same effort.

For blogs with decent amount of traffic, you will start getting requests for sponsored posts. SEO agencies will reach out to you and ask if you are able to publish a blog post for them and linking back to their client’s site.

How Much Can I Earn From Sponsored Posts?

The charges for sponsored posts depends heavily in your blog domain rating. On average, you can earn a decent $20 to $200 per sponsored blog post.

    Tips For Sponsored Posts

Google and other search engines are NOT fond of sponsored posts. Therefore, you need to make sure that you are careful with the link backs and you only hand pick the links.

Plus, it is important to use sponsored posts as a supplement to your daily, weekly or monthly blog publishing, and not just to start a blog in Malaysia to earn money through sponsored post.

Summary How To Start A Blog In Malaysia And Make Money Online?

Starting a blog in Malaysia is by far the best decision I had made in the online marketing career.

Not only that this had helped me to be financially independent, it had opened many doors for me, including speaking opportunities and networking with the best entrepreneurs in the world.

I hope that you find this article useful and ask me anything in the comments below.

Do you REALLY want to start an online business in 2020?

You want to know how to start an online business in 2020 but you have no idea where to start. Just like most of us, you want to start an online business with zero investment and low risk.

But, how do you achieve such feat? Today, I’m sharing my online journey with you, one that I had started since 2004. What you will get in this posts are:

    • My frustrations

I’m serious when I say that “I understand.” I wanted to do more than just a 9 to 5 job. I wanted to live my life and still make a living for my family. Starting an online business helped me grow more than I can ever imagine.

    • Taking the leap of faith

Starting an online business in 2020 doesn’t mean that you can ditch your day job. At least, not yet. It involves planning and strategy to create strong passive income before you can leave your job permanently.

    • Step by step guide in building an online business

Anyone can start an online business but only the 1% made it to the ‘hall of fame.’ here, we will discuss some of the common struggles and the important steps you need to grow your online business.

Without further delay, let’s start learning.

    Table of Contents

Frustration lead me to online business

    Frustration In Workplace

    Here’s my story.

I have a day job and they pay me well. The benefits were good too, and I was able to put food on the table for my family. With the salary I was earning, it was easy to consider that I’m in the highest tier for an employee in my country. I was well making over $100,000 a year (that’s approximately $8,333 per month).

I work for years (one company to another) and what grew was just two things—higher position in the company and better salary. Deep inside, I wasn’t growing as much as I thought it would.

As a matter of fact, I was dying inside. I spend so much time at work that I neglected my own self and my family.

You see, I was doing quite okay. As a salaried-employee, I was also working on my side hustle. I did some blogging works, buying/selling domains and some other freelance geeks. A good month could see me cashing out over $15,000 in total income and a normal month would be over $10,000 without fail.

One day, I decided to stop. Stop doing things for others a.k.a. making dreams of others a reality and focus on my OWN dreams.

    • I wanted financial freedom.
    • I wanted to start my own online business.
    • I wanted my online business to grow and succeed.

But it is not easy. It takes a lot of courage to go from easy salary to not easy salary. Being an entrepreneur, there is NO guarantee on how much you can earn each month. There are many low months where I make just $1,000 (which is barely enough for my family to survive).

But as the saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

I made my first financial break 3 years into my online venture. I started doing “online stuffs” in 2004 and in 2007, I was making rather decent income from the Internet.

Starting an online business is not easy

Starting An Online Business In 2020

If you want to start an online business in 2020, hear me out.

You need to trust yourself, in your product/service/program. Your best friends, family members and the ones you really believe in will try to talk you out from starting your own online business.

Well, they do no harm—because they care for you (and they are afraid if you will fail).

The problem is this. If you are NOT taking the leap of faith by starting an online business in 2020, you are not fulfilling yourself.

You may earn a large sum of money and have the best career one could ever imagine. But if you are unfulfilled deep inside, you are a complete failure in life. That’s the ULTIMATE failure.

There an important disclaimer right here.

I started not just one online business, but several online businesses. Here are some of them:

    • I started blogging (learn how to start a blog now)
    • I invested and promoted several network marketing programs which I believed in
    • I launched my own freelancing ‘agency’
    • I buy and sell domains
    • I invested (heavily) in some ponzi schemes for fast returns (high risk investments)

Looking back, I had a lot on my plate. And until today, my back-then girlfriend (now wife) didn’t knew I maxed out all my credit cards hoping for a big break.

I knew I had to take the risk—and I’m willing to go all in to achieve my goals.

    Failures, failures and more failures

    Failures

Were you hoping for some childhood story type of scenario where I found my big break and became a millionaire? No, not even close yet.

I hit the ceiling in my credit score (that’s bad, okay) and I nearly went bankrupt (not once, not twice but thrice). Even at the point of giving up, I did not. I continue to grind on for another 2 years.

Hoping between jobs hoping for higher pay while still working on my goals.

In 2007, I had my big break.

    The long awaited life-line

    Helping Hands In Online Business

One of my blog that I had been on (for over 3 years) started to rank well on Google. Like really well—top spot on Google for a competitive keyword.

    Now, you might be wondering.

    • What did I do?
    • Why am I sharing all this?

The answer is simple. I been through some tough times and I understand how it felt like. In recent years, I had two kids of my own and I gave them the opportunity to explore the world. I’m not hoping for them to be great doctors or lawyers, I want them to be happy.

And in order to achieve that, we need to give them the opportunity to try. With proper guidance, anyone can succeed!

Getting started with online business in 2020

Want To Start An Online Business In 2020

The easiest way to start an online business in 2020 is to define the platform you want to use.

It can be video (YouTube), blogging or freelancing. What matters most is that you are able to sustain and maintain the same ‘output’ in producing content constantly without fail, without getting bored and more importantly, without burning yourself out.

In the next paragraph, I’m going to show you exactly how to start an online business in 2020 through blogging.

If you prefer freelancing, you should read this guide instead: How I made $3k+ a month with Upwork without much experience {and investment)?

Start An Online Blog With A Niche

    Find Your Blog Niche

Most bloggers start a blog by registering a domain and getting a web hosting plan. While those are critical, they shouldn’t be the top priority.

Instead, focus on finding the right NICHE for your online business.

My definition of niche is simply finding a topic that you are deeply interested in (one that you don’t mind losing your sleep over).

    Here’s a little about me:

    • I like going for holidays
    • I like spending time with my family
    • I love making money online
    • I love having fun with paintball
    • I love WordPress and web development stuffs

I like a lot of things, but am only passionate on a few items in life. The above lead me to launch this blog, ReginaldChan.net (for make money tips), AngryPaintball.com (for my passion in painballing) and WPMaven.net (for WordPress related matters).

As a co-founder who manages my own digital marketing agency, managing three blogs (not included my company blog), I have a lot on my plate.

Yes, I sleep about 5 hours each day and I had absolutely no problem with that. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed crafting actionable blog posts like this one all the time.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

Passion drives you (far and wide)

There is no denial that passion is required for you to be successful in your online business in 2020.

Working on your passion will help you grow your business especially when you are starting a business from scratch.

How to start an online business with blogging?

    Blogging Online Business 2020

Once you had define your niche, you start by thinking about starting a blog. I know there are many influencers bloggers and brands who say that you need to find a profitable niche.

    But that’s wrong.

Every niche can be monetized and every niche is marketable. The amount of money you can earn from that given niche depends deeply in your skill in persuasion.

So, let’s get started by (yes!) starting a blog.

    1. Get A Domain Name

Get a dot com or dot net, and get over it. Do not overthink.

One of the biggest mistakes we made is by thinking what’s good and what could be better.

Even worst, we change our minds more than three times at the check out page (when choosing a domain name). This shit happens.

If you really need some help choosing a domain name, here are some great ways to choose a domain name.

    2. Get A Reliable Web Hosting

Reliable Web Hosting For Online Business 2020

A good web hosting goes a long way. Having a reliable web hosting company is like working with the right electrical company that powers your house. Without electric, there will be no lights, heater and security alarm.

A reliable web hosting company offers:

    • Good uptime and close to no downtime
    • Supports you when you need it (like when you get hacked)
    • Multiple datacenters that you can choose from
    • Affordable pricing (that doesn’t burn a hole in your wallet)

If you are on a tight budget and just starting out with your online business, going with BlueHost makes it really easy for you. With 1-click WordPress installation and excellent pricing (as low as $2.49 per month with free domain and SSL certificate), this is definitely a steal. You can also click here to find the best BlueHost discount.

    3. Install A WordPress Theme

Install WordPress Theme For Online Business

Next, it is time to decorate your WordPress site. A WordPress theme is like clothes to your body.

There are many free WordPress themes that you can download including my personal favorite, Astra Theme.

Learn how to install a WordPress theme

    4. Install WordPress Plugins

Install WordPress Plugins For Online Business

Next up, choosing the right WordPress plugin functionality to install into your database.

Plugins are meant to help you achieve specific goals in WordPress without you needing to hard code your site. This means that you can spend more time creating content that sells, instead of focusing on web development which you might not be good in.

Here is a list of WordPress plugins that you need to use (to make your online business a success):

    • SEO plugin
    • Cache plugin
    • Image optimizer
    • WordPress form
    • Security plugin
    • Security plugin

The most important plugin of all?

WordPress visual builder, of course! With a visual builder, you don’t have to spend hours trying to learn coding such as HTML, CSS and JaveScript (of course, you can learn it for free here). All you need is to select an element and drop it to the spot you wanted.

    Here’s what I mean.

Thrive Architect vs Divi Front End Editing

Using WordPress builder plugin such as Thrive Architect (above), you can easily change and customize the layout based on your choice—without coding skills. You can take a look at Thrive Architect or reading this post, Best WordPress Visual Builders for Beginners to discover another 4 awesome WordPress builder plugins.

    5. Publish Great Content

Great Content For Online Business 2020

Last but not least, you heard before that content is king. If you want to start an online business in 2020 with blogging, you need to constantly craft/publish great content.

The two keywords to focus are “constant” and “great.”

Publishing daily content isn’t enough in today’s challenging world. You need to have great content and with quality content, you can easily build some level of authority.

Publishing quality content helps you to build a strong fan base and authority in your niche.

    6. Learn And Implement Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing Online Business Ideas 2020

Last but not least, monetize your WordPress blog by working with affiliate companies.

Affiliate marketing is a process where you get paid for every referral you make.

There are many ways to start this form of business and you can refer to this guide to learn more about affiliate marketing.

You know that a self hosted WordPress blog is the way to go—but how to go around with this? More importantly, how do you start a self-hosted WordPress blog? How do you create a WordPress blog from scratch?

The opportunity here is very real and is definitely something you wouldn’t want to leave out. We all have something to say. Blogs not only make that possible, they make it easy. All you have to do is act. It’s time to dive in and figure out what it takes to get your message heard, to see your cause spread. Of course, with the opportunity to make money on the side too.

Setting up a self-hosted blog sounds technical but is, in fact, easy to do. And yes, I think it’s worth investing a little money into having full control over your website. I’m going to show you exactly what you need to do (if you already have a blog set up like this, feel free to share this post with a friend).

In the next few minutes, I’m going to show you (exactly) how you can create a self-hosted WordPress blog under 15 minutes or less. The first stop would be a quick video on “why you need a self-hosted WordPress blog”, followed by an awesome infographic before ending up with a simple 5 step tutorial in creating your first self hosted WordPress blog.

P.S. Do you know that my primary goal of creating a WordPress blog is to own a personally-branded website I could have control over. And I put more effort into the blog,  opportunities started flowing in—more than I could ever imagine.

What Is A Self Hosted WordPress Blog?

This is by far the most common I often get from others.

    • What is a self hosted WordPress blog?
    • What is the differences between blogging on WordPress.com to WordPress.org?

In a nutshell, self hosting your WordPress site means downloading your own copy of the WordPress content management system (CMS), finding a domain provider, and signing up for a hosting service to host your site on the Internet.

I hope the explanation below helps you clarify the matter.

Self Hosted WordPress Blog Differences Between WordPress.com and WordPress.org
    WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

Self hosted WordPress blog a.k.a. WordPress.org. Here, you can download the WordPress CMS and install it on your own hosting server. Your URL would be something like this: yourdomain.com.

Hosted WordPress blog a.k.a. WordPress.com. This is NOT a self hosted WordPress blog. You partially own the domain and you are bound to the rules (such as no monetization etc.). Your URL would be something liekt his: yourdomain.wordpress.com.

Tutorial: 5 Steps To Create A Self-Hosted WordPress Blog

If you prefer reading text versus viewing a video, here are the quick steps you can take:

    1. Get a reliable web host. A web host is where your website “lives.” You own it, but you pay a small fee to keep it online (kind of like paying property taxes to the government). I recommend Bluehost for only $2.95/month (a special rate for my readers). It’s one of the most popular web hosts on the Internet, comes with 1-click everything (no coding skills required) and offers excellent, 24/7 customer service via live chat, email and phone.
    2. Register a unique blog name (domain name). You can get a domain name (e.g. www.reginaldchan.net) through your hosting company. I recommend doing it this way, so you can keep everything streamlined. With Bluehost, this service is free with a hosting plan (as opposed to paying extra through a service like Godaddy.com). Take a read at this article on the 16+ ways to choose a blog name (don’t worry, you can thank me later). The trick of finding a good domain name is focus on a short and easy-to-remember brand name. Check out this video for more information.
    3. Install WordPress. Blogging requires software, and the best that I’ve found is WordPress. It’s easy, quick, and best of all, free. You can set up WordPress through your host (Bluehost does this for you for free through it’s easy 1-click automatic installation and setup). Otherwise, you have to go through WordPress.org to download the software and then upload it to a host. It is important to note that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different blogging platforms.
    4. Get a theme. When you start using WordPress, you get access to a bunch of beautiful blog designs (called “themes”), many of which are free. For those just getting started, I recommend Twenty Nineteen; it’s a simple, neat, well coded, mobile friendly and above all, an elegant WordPress theme. If you are serious in making started a self hosted WordPress blog for blogging business, I recommend you to use Divi by Elegant Themes (read the review) instead. This tool allows you to build blog posts without touching a single line of code. Take a look at the demo here.
    5. Log in and start blogging. The URL for your dashboard (which redirects to the login page if you’re not logged in) is yourblogname.com/wp-admin/. Once logged in, click “Posts” on the left-hand sand, and then select “Add New.” Write a title and create some content for your new blog, and you’re off to the races!

And that’s it; now you’re blogging. Which is where the hard, but good, work of writing begins. If you’re ready to jump into this world of blogging, click the image below to get started with Bluehost.

See you on the other side!

Create A Self Hosted WordPress Blog With BlueHost

What if you have already have a domain name?

This is a great question. If you already have a domain name and probably a web hosting, moving to BlueHost (or any other web hosting companies) is not that hard. Seriously.

Most web hosting companies offer free migration and make sure you ask the support team about it. The standard way to move a domain successfully from one web host to another is through changing the nameservers or IP address. In most cases, changing nameservers is the safest and highly recommended solution.

This is how you can change nameservers when moving your domain to BlueHost.

If you’re ready to get started blogging with Bluehost, you can use my affiliate link to get a little extra off the normal $5.99 price (only $2.95/month). They’re a top recommended host by WordPress and have great customer service. I’ve worked with them before and been very pleased with the service.

  • Choose A Blog Name: 16 Ways To Find The Perfect Blog Name

Choose A Blog Name: 16 Ways To Find The Perfect Blog Name

Are you struggling to choose a name for your blog?

I had been there myself—I wanted to start a blog, and I created a long list of blog name ideas just to realized that I can’t come up with a good blog name. At least, a blog name that I can accept.

Here’s the cold hard fact: Naming a blog is challenging.

In order for you to choose a blog name at the end of this article, I decided that it is best to create two parts in this guide.

The first part is a simple but highly checklist of things to consider and questions to ask yourself. The goal here is to get you to put on your thinking cap—the blog name is more than just a name. The blog name ideas should come from things that you are passionate about and carries some weight in your blog branding.

The second part is a list of tips and blog name generator tools to help you. I know some calls this the methods and inspiration section but for me, it is more as a guideline. These guidelines could lead to some awesome and unexpected blog name ideas.

This guide is excellent for bloggers who are planning to start a blog. Regardless the type of blog you want to start, I’m devoted to help you with getting the right name for your blog. Always remember that a choosing a blog name is an important step—because it will effect how you can drive traffic to your blog.

Here’s a quick video on what to expect from this blog post today.

Part 1 – Things to consider / Questions to ask yourself

Anyone can choose a blog name and start one under $10. What differentiate you and your competitors is the ability to launch and maintain a successful blog.

Step 1: What would be the ideal topic for your blog?

Most of the time, we are confident that we know what we want to blog about. At least, we thought so.

Successful blogging is more than just “I thought I like” and “I think I like“. You got to love the topic and be super passionate about it. This allows you to have a competitive edge.

Allow me to give you an example. Through experience, I had created thousands of WordPress blogs—some which are generating thousands of traffic a day and some which are not doing that well. Amazingly, the blogs that are generating massive amount of traffic are the ones with the topics that I’m really passionate about.

The blogging materials you produce are always better in quality when you have a passion in them.

The ideal topic for your blog is always the one that you are super happy to discuss and learn further. It can range from health, nutrients, relationship, business, blogging (yes, wink wink), make money blogging, website development, social media marketing etc. The sky is practically your only limit when it comes to choosing a blog topic (and choosing a blog name).

If you’ve already decided on your niche, then the answer to question one should be straightforward. If you’re still undecided then now is the time to answer the question.

My wife used to say this, “Think about it logically.”

Here’s my honest take. If you spend hours choosing a name for your blog and then decide to blog about something unrelated, you’ll have wasted your time. For instance, you decide to go for an awesome blog name, ‘Genius Photography’ and then choose the gaming niche.

Of course, if you decide on a non-specific name or use your own name, then you’ll have more room for maneuver.

But, I’d still recommend choosing your niche first as it’s a valid exercise.

Step 2: Who is your target audience?

Do you know that choosing a cool blog name involves heavily in understand your target audience?

I recommend you to take a look at these perspectives.

Let’s say you started a blog. What type of audience will get the most value out of your content? What name/tone of voice would best resonate with these highly targeted blog audience?

Here are some ideas to help you get started (and put on your thinking cap in searching for the best blog name).

WPBeginner.com has an audience which are passionately interested in WordPress related matters.

WPBeginner is the largest WordPress resource site for WordPress Beginners with easy to understand WordPress tutorials for mastering the basics and beyond.

On the other hand, the SmartPassiveincome.com focuses in helping beginners with launching their online business and generating additional income streams.

The trick in finding the best blog names?

Having a firm understanding of your target audience will help you choose a suitable blog name.

Step 3: What is the tone/voice of your blog going to be like?

The next question actually follows on from your target audience. The two examples above, WPBeginner offers an easy to understand, guiding and soft tone that is suited for beginners.

The Smart Passive Income offers very casual conversational tone because they provide trending online business tips using blog posts, podcasts and videos.

If you are in the technology niche, it is best to combine fun and professionalism in your writing. Here’s a good example by SoyaCincau.com.

how to find the perfect blog name
SoyaCincau.com offers technological news which target audience are mainly from Asia Pacific.

Step 4: Will you be building your brand around your blog name?

No matter you are selling a product or service, your blog name is an excellent way to build and promote your brand.

For example, Pinch of Yum is a food blog with hundreds of simple and tasty recipes. It also provides resources for other food bloggers including photography and monetization tips:

Pinch of Yum Choose A Blog Name
A food blog with hundreds of simple, healthy recipes and food blogging resources for food photography and blog monetization.

If you had followed my affiliate marketing course (which you can sign up here at no cost), one of the most important thing that I had discuss is building your brand name. Building a strong brand name will create some level of credibility for you and you blog.

Step 5: Does the blog name read OK when it’s in a domain URL format?

Listen to me. You really do not want to be caught in this one.

A cool blog name could easily backfire—when you join up separate words and inadvertently create the wrong words.

BoredPanda.com had shared a long list of worst blog names you can ever imagine and here is one sample for you.

Hot To Avoid Choosing A Bad Domain Name
Think out of the box when choosing a domain name to avoid embarrassing moments

You can see the logo uses two colors to separate the words, but when you look at the domain in plain text, it becomes embarrassing.

Make sure you type your intended blog name into a domain name format and check. It’s also worth getting somebody else to review your idea because it’s easy to become word blind.

Step 6: What happens if you change or vary your niche?

When we start a blog, we always focus on a niche. But here’s the thing.

    Things change.

Sometimes you’ll end up switching or varying your original idea.

Lucky for you, it is okay. Yes, like seriously okay.

When I first started ReginaldChan.net, I wanted to make it the best blog for bloggers. I ended up diversifying to SEO, freelancing and WordPress as sub-niches. little did I know this little action of mine had (indirectly) help me to generate over 6,000 visitors each day to this blog.

But one of the things you’ll need to consider at that point is whether your blog name and brand are right.

Here are some guidelines for you to get started with.

    • Does your blog name resonates with your new niche?
    • How much diversification you can afford for your blog?
    • Are you able to perform internal backlinks from one category to another?

If you are a beginner in blogging and finding ways to choose a blog name, the above could be difficult questions to consider … simply because we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.

An important point to take note is this: you should consider to choose a more open-ended, generic blog name.

Always remember that it’s not the end of the world if you don’t. You can still change. But you might lose momentum in the process.

Don’t worry, these ‘momentum’ can be gained back with the right strategies.

Step 7: Is it easy to say or spell?

One of the important criteria when choosing a blog name is to consider the spelling part.

    • Is the blog name easy to pronounce?
    • Is the blog name easy to spell?

Getting this part right is crucial. Sometimes a blog name looks great on paper, but when you say it out loud, there’s ambiguity.

Here’s a real life story of mine.

Some years back, I had a blog name called eStudioWerks.com. It sounded great and I knew I was on to something. That was until I had to reach out to my web host support for some help. They asked me to confirm if I meant eStudioWorks.com. You see, “werks” and “works” sounded alike and that could be an issue for you in branding in the future. You are definitely going to confuse your readers!

Need another cool blog name example?

Photo sharing site ‘Flickr’ also had similar problems because people naturally typed ‘Flicker’. They ended up buying both domains and setting up a permanent redirect, so they didn’t lose business. Try typing ‘flicker.com’ into the URL bar:

Flickr How To Choose A Cool Blog Name
Website visitors are always confused between Flickr and Flicker

And you’ll get directed to ‘flickr.com’ instead:

    choosing a unique blog name
Searching for Flicker.com will redirects you to Flickr.com

The moral of the story for choosing a blog name is simple: Trying to be clever with words doesn’t always work out best.

    Part 2: Methods / Inspiration

    Choose Blog Name Inspiration
Inspiration and imagination are great ways to choose a blog name

The second part in choosing a blog name is through using the right methods. Most of the time, we choose a blog name based on inspiration or our blogging heroes.

For instance, I look highly at Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income. I ended up purchasing the domain name, Smart Internet Lifestyle to be like him!

The purpose of this part of choosing a blog name is to remove the guessing game. Here are ten tools and methods to help you choose the best blog name.

    Method 1: Self-named blog names

Typically, there are many ways to choose a blog name and to be honest, there could hundreds of them. This specific blog naming formula is my favorite.

    Self-named blog names.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is by far the most popular blog name generator for bloggers. Here are some of the most powerful self-named blog names in the market today.

And of course, my own beloved blog name, ReginaldChan.net

You see, having a self-named blog is pretty awesome. For starters, you are branding yourself. Your name is always the most important thing in life—and you want to make the most out of it.

Self-named blogs are best when you are creating a brand for yourself. Some blogging niches such as self-development, coaching, public speaking and consulting are best with self-named blogs.

As this point of writing, I know that there are many words around that the disadvantages of using a self-named blog.

To be honest, it is not much different compared to a unique blog name. Depending on the name and blogging niche you are in, the challenges faced for branding your new blog name is rather similar.

Therefore, if you are comfortable with a self-named blog name, I recommend you to proceed with it. Don’t let the naysayers turn you down!

Method 2: Blog name that resonates

This is one of the most common methods in choosing a blog name.

blog name = [topic or audience group] + [end goal or transformation]

If this is something you are interested in, here are two more examples that you can use as guidance.

    • iPhone Photography School = [iPhone owners] + [lessons on how to take better photos with your iPhone]
    • Photography Life = [photographers (all levels)] + [guides on landscape, wildlife, and portrait photography]

Sometimes you can flip the formula around:

    • blog name = [end goal or transformation] + [topic or audience group]
    • Expert Photography = [become an expert at photography] + [beginner photographers]

Do you know that this is an awesome method to choose a blog name? Some years back, I came across a blog name, SocialMediaRush.com and ended up buying the domain. 11 months later, I sold that domain for around $500. Pretty good ROI if you ask me!

I recommend you to get started by drafting all the generic keywords (1 to 2 words long) and add some variables either in the front or back of the keyword. You will be surprised on the blog names you can create from scratch.

    Method 3: Create a Portmanteau

Choose A Blog Name With Portmanteau
What is Portmanteau and how it helps you to choose a blog name?

No, we are not talking about travelling bags but more on creating unique blog names.

In short, a portmanteau is a word that blends the sounds and combines the meanings of two others.

    For example:

    • ‘podcast’is a combination of the words iPod and broadcast
    • ‘brunch’ comes from breakfast and lunch

You can combine two words to create a new word, especially two words that speak about what you’ll help your audience with, or key brand values.

A great example to this is CopyBlogger.com, where it combines the word “copy” with “blogger.”

Using portmanteau in choosing a blog name
Using portmanteau in choosing a blog name

The usage of portmanteaus allows you to create very unique blog names that are often times still available (.com domain).

This method of choosing a blog name allows you to save money in purchasing expensive, premium domains and at the same time, owning a unique blog name.

Here is a long list of portmanteaus for more inspiration and you can refer to WordUnscrambler.net for more blog name ideas too.

    Method 4: Blog name generators

I love using blog name generators to choose a blog name and the reason behind this is simple. You don’t have to crack your brain to think of the next premium blog name.

I, for one, is not really good in coming up with blog names. That’s why I opt for self-named blog instead.

When it comes to blog names generators, there are many that you can choose from (thanks to Google). The advantages using blog name generators are as follow:

    • Free to use
    • Multiple variations
    • Ability to check domain availability in bulk
    • Fast results

    • Offers related and similar blog names

    Wordoid.com

    Wordoids are made-up words.

They look nice and feel great. They are good for naming things.

The tool has some input parameters on the left-hand side where you select:

    • Language – Select one language to get wordoids constructed according to the rules of that language. Select two or more to blend the tastes of several languages.
    • Quality – Defines how wordoids look, sound and feel. The higher it is, the more they resemble the natural words of the selected languages.
    • Pattern – Wordoids may begin with, end with or contain a short fragment. Enter something, or leave the field empty to create completely random wordoids.
    • Length – Set the maximum length of the wordoids. Short wordoids tend to look better than long ones.
    • Domain – Choose whether to show or hide wordoids with both .com and .net domain names unavailable.

Here are some suggestions for ‘high-quality wordoids in English, that contain “blogging” and are no more than 10 letters long’:

The only funny thing about Wordoid is that it does generate strange blog names.

Method 6: Choose a blog name using Thesaurus

As a writer and blogger, a thesaurus is one of my most-used tools. But it can also be a source of inspiration when you’re trying to come up with your blog name.

Thesaurus is a great tool when it comes to finding synonyms (when choosing a blog name).

Synonyms are those words that have a similar meaning to your keyword. For starters, the word ‘tutorial’ has many different meanings depending on the context in which it’s used:

Choose A Blog Name using Thesaurus
Thesaurus offers a wide range of tools to help you find unique blog names

Clicking on any of the relevant terms will open up more options and other synonyms.

This is what happens when I click on “academic”:

    Relevant Blog Names
This tool also offers a list of most relevant keywords (highlighted in dark yellow)

In short, using a thesaurus is a great way to generate blog name ideas (and without paying a single cent for it).

Method 7: Using alliteration to generate blog name ideas

Alliteration means the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Here are two examples to give you an idea:

    Using alliteration for blog names
    Shooting Star Soccer School
Choosing a unique blog name with alliteration
    Music Mayhem

One of the most satisfying things about alliterations is the natural rhythm they bring to your brand name.

Out of ideas when choosing a blog name? Use the thesaurus to find more related keywords!

    Method 8: Abbreviations

How to use abbreviations to create cool blog names?

    Wait, what is abbreviations?

An abbreviation can often turn out to be better in the long run than the full-length version of a brand name. Take International Business Machines for example. That’s quite long-winded, and with so many letters there’s a high chance it could get misspelled or mistyped. But IBM is more snappy and memorable.

Three-letter abbreviations seem to do particularly well:

    • BMW – Bayerische Motoren Werkein German, or Bavarian Motor Works in English
    • RAC – Royal Automobile Club
    • PWC – Price Waterhouse Coopers

Method 9: Unrelated words (bold blog names)

Unrelated Names In Choosing A Blog Name
Unrelated name ideas could lead to unique blog names

If you are searching for the best blog names, you should let your imagination go wild. In other words, there is absolutely no issue using unrelated words to create a cool blog name.

Want a catchy blog name? Using unrelated words for your blog name to be different from the rest.

Here’s a sample of catchy blog names.

If you think that your blog name doesn’t sounds good, think again.

Here’s a billion dollar tech company that uses a fruit name:

Make the blog name as unique as possible to your brand

Method 10: Blog name is another language

If you’re struggling to find a unique name in your language, then consider trying a different one. Or combine words from different languages.

I am always searching for the best blog names that I could buy and keep them in the inventory. To be honest, it is really hard to find unique ones as those will go off the selling list like hot cakes.

The solution? Searching for another language!

I’m living in Asia and being an Asian, I am exposed to multiple languages since childhood time. I always love spy movies and sadly, spy.com is taken. Now, what happens when I convert the word “spy” into Malay language? It is now “pengintip” and I was lucky to discover that pengintip.com is available (and of course, I purchased it).

The moral of the story is simple. If you can’t find a blog name in English, consider searching in another form of language. If you don’t speak multiple languages, consider using Google Translate to do the translation for you.

    You might just get lucky!

Method 11: Focus on your competitors

Use your competitors to choose a blog name
Use your competitors to choose a blog name

I know, focusing on your competitors may not be the best thing you can do when it comes to searching for a blog name … but sometimes it can be enough to give you a moment of inspiration. Personally, I love to consider it the “Ah-ha moment.

The concept here is real simple—your competitors would give you an idea of the blog name.

For example, if you are into the search engine optimization (SEO) niche, you might want to consider these as your competitors:

    • Search Engine Journal
    • Search Engine Round Table
    • Search Engine Land
    • Search Engine Watch

As you can see, all of these starts with “Search Engine”. Thus, you might want to do the same too.

Method 12: Old school—pen and paper

Pen And Paper To Choose A Blog Name
A pen and paper could generate unique blog names as it removes digital interference

Calling all old souls out there. If you want to find the best blog name, this is a great way to do so.

By using a pen and paper, it helps you to visualize the topics and possible blog names. To start, here’s what you need to do.

    1. Divide the paper into two parts
    2. On the left side of the paper, write down all the general keywords you can come up with (try to stick as close as your niche as possible)
    3. On the right side of the paper, write down all the adjectives and random words you can think of
    4. Pick one name on the left and on the left, and combine them
    5. Mix and match until you find one that you are happy with

You can take this one step further and invite friends and family to a brainstorming session. Everyone has a different perspective, and you’re sure to end up with ideas you hadn’t considered.

    Method 13: Expired domains

Expired Domain Choose A Blog Name
If luck is on your site, you are able to find premium blog names with a fraction of the cost

Are you looking for hidden gems? I bet you do.

Expired domains is one of my go-to tools to choose a blog name. There are two ways you can use expired domains to find a blog name:

    • Using expired domains as idea generators to unique blog names
    • Purchase expired domains with unique blog names

How to use expired domains to choose a blog name? Follow these exact steps:

    1. Head over to ExpiredDomains.net
    2. Register for a free account
    3. Head over to Deleted .com
    4. Select Show Filter
    5. Tick no Numbers
    6. Tick no Hyphens
    7. Tick no Adult Names
    8. Choose length (I recommend up to 10)
    9. Directory Word Domains (choose English or any language of your choice)
    10. Tick only new last 12 hours (or you can go for 24 hours)
    11. Tick only available Domains
    12. Domain per page (set to 200)
    13. Click Apply Filter

Now, what do you get from the above setting?

You will get list of super targeted, fresh and highly relevant expired domains. You can now decide to either buy them (if they are available) or get a blog name similar to them.

    Here’s how it looks like.

Choose A Blog Name Using Expired Domains
ExpiredDomains.net is one of the best places to choose a blog name for free

I recommend going through the expired blog name lists with .com and .net at least once a day. You will never know when you hit the jackpot!

Method 14: Heading to the bookstore

Choose A Blog Name At Bookstores
Get blog name ideas at bookstores near you

    Wait a minute. What?!

Yes, bookstore. I love bookstores because it gives me a nice range of ideas. Regardless it is blog post ideas or choosing a blog name, running through the books in the shelf is a great way to generate blog names for free.

Here’s how it is done (I recommend you to try this as soon as possible):

    1. Make sure you have a notepad or a note-taking app installed on your phone (I use Evernote by the way)
    2. Head over to the best sellers section
    3. Jot down a list of titles that interest you the most (they can even be single word)
    4. Work the titles in your brain or at home
    5. Come up with some awesome blog names

When it comes to choosing a blog name, you want to choose a blog name that is popular and attracts others. Lucky for you, most authors would spend days crafting the best book titles. Therefore, use this book titles to your advantage and try to incorporate relevant ones into your blog name.

You may even want to search for relevant blog names using free blog name generators.

Method 15: Avoid brand names and trademarks

Choose a blog name that is not being trademarked

I made this mistake early on in my blogging career—and I certainly hope you don’t do the same too when choosing a blog name.

I purchased WordPressProfs.com and realized that I had infringed the word “WordPress.”

When you choose a blog name, make sure you avoid going for big names as it will bite you in the ass down the road.

Method 16: Avoid using numbers or special characters

Avoid Using Special Characters When Choosing A Blog Name
Choose a blog name that is easy to type out

Having a cool blog name is not about having special characters in it. This could be one of the biggest mistakes ever!

You should focus choosing a blog name that is easy to remember and don’t take a long time to ‘figure that out.

In other words, blog names that is easy to typed out will always be the best option.

    Summary: Choosing A Blog Name

There are many ways you can choose a blog name. Whether you are searching for a cool blog name, a good blog name or a unique blog name, the above 16 steps will definitely help you out.

How Fast Can I Make Money Using Affiliate Marketing?

    Make Money With Affiliate Marketing

Want to know how fast you can make money with affiliate marketing? The answer is “it depends.” There is no exact formula in knowing how long it takes for you to make your first dollar using affiliate marketing. Some bloggers make the first dollar within days and some takes a few months depending on the strategy, competition and market environment.

But certainly, the above is not going to satisfy your ‘craving in knowing how long it really takes to make money online using affiliate marketing.

For starters, let’s get some facts right.

Affiliate marketing is a legitimate online business (and not a scam)

So, why are there parties who say affiliate marketing is purely a scam?

The answer is simple. The first part is that they probably aren’t making money using affiliate marketing and they are jealous. The second part is that there are also affiliate marketers who make a living by scamming others (such as promoting a product they don’t use but yet, they publish a review on the product with the hopes of making sales out of it).

That is the ugly side of affiliate marketing and it is something none of us can control.

How to make money with affiliate marketing?

If affiliate marketing is a legitimate business model, then why it is so hard to make money from it?

    Competition is the word here.

There are just too much competition in the marketplace and marketers (including myself) are often seen struggling to make money from it.

Want to know how to make money with affiliate marketing?

Here are some criteria you need to be successful:

    • Strategizing your marketing plan
    • Patience (you don’t make money overnight)
    • Constantly on the lookout for trends
    • Persuasive skills

Summary: How fast can I make money using affiliate marketing?

Assuming that you have the right strategy, patience, great listening skills and persuasive skills, you are bound to make some money from affiliate marketing.

On average, I would say it takes around 30 to 90 days for you to earn your first dollar through affiliate marketing.

Want success in affiliate marketing? There is NO quick ways in making money. Have a strong plan in mind and constantly build trust.

That’s how you can build your audience and finally, make money with affiliate marketing.
