Advanced Tutorial For Setting Up GetResponse For Email Marketing

I am in love with the GetResponse email marketing provider and my experience with them since day one was mostly sweet. Having an email marketing provider that work hand in hand with you is like having a salesman that takes care of all the marketing and reaching out for you.

While this is easier said than done, setting up an email marketing solution correctly is always challenging and confusing. Been there and done that to be honest.

Don’t worry about it as I will be going through (in detail) on how to setup GetResponse email from the scratch, and no skill needed!

What you will learn in this article are:

    • How to signup for GetResponse?
    • Setting up your first campaign
    • Setting up an autoresponder
    • How to create email messages
    • How to use the RSS to Email feature for email marketing

As you can see, this is a superb long article and thus, I recommend you to bookmark this for future reference.

    How good is GetResponse?

I have used quite a few email marketing services in the past and to be utterly honest, nothing really come close to GetResponse (both service level and cost).

GetResponse offer pretty much everything out-of-the-box when it comes to email marketing and features such as:

    1. Responsive designs
    2. A/B testing
    3. Auto responders
    4. Email creator
    5. Landing pages creator
    6. Social sharing features
    7. Email intelligence (analytics)
    8. List boosters (ease of importing contacts)
    9. Form builders
    10. Inbox preview
    11. RSS to email
    12. Time travel (more on this later on)
    13. Online surveys

And we are not done yet! There are more than a dozen more features on GetResponse.

From features to email marketing prices, GetResponse (in my personal opinion) is probably one of the best bang for your bucks service.

The lowest package starts at $12.30 per month for 1,000 subscribers and you can upgrade or downgrade at anytime. What makes it even juicier is that you can easily try GetResponse email marketing for 30 days free of charge.

Try GetResponse for free (and no credit card required).

Setting up your first email campaign with GetResponse

An email campaign is considered a list. Every time a reader signs up for your newsletter, he or she gets ‘imported’ into the email list.

If you are setting up an email campaign, I would suggest you to create several campaigns instead of one. For example, you can create:

    • Optin for case studies
    • Optin for promotions
    • Optin for general newsletters

The above are segmentation and this makes email marketing much easier. In other words, you would want to avoid sending all types of emails to everyone in your list. Instead, you want the right followers to receive the right emails.

Having proper email segments could easily boost open rates, conversion and reduce subscriptions.

    1. Click on the Create Campaign tab as seen on the top right (or center) of the page.

    2. Select a campaign name and press Create New Campaign.

    Complete setup guide for GetResponse

    3. Once done, click on Edit Campaign Settings. There are two very important options here to set which are Campaign Email Address and Notifications.

This is what you see after setting up a campaign

Special settings for in GetResponse email campaign
These are the two custom settings you may decide to opt-in.

If Campaign Email Address is setup accordingly, readers could easily sign up for your mailing list by sending a blank email to campaign-name@getresponse.com. I personally leave this option out.

Notifications feature is pretty clear cut. You get notified for everyone who subscribed to your mailing list and enable this option if you are interested to get instant notification on new signups.

    4. You are all set!

By now, you have completed setting up your first email marketing campaign. Give yourself a pat on the back or a cold beer (you may send one over for me too).

    Setting up GetResponse autoresponder

An autoresponder is like having a customer service agent on steroids. Yes, autoresponder is used to say “hi” and “thank you” to all your new signups.

Basically my GetResponse autoresponder settings are:

    • Welcome email & free gift reminder on next email
    • Email containing free gift
    • A follow up email to check if they had received the free gift

Doing this manually to everyone of your signup would be tedious but with an autoresponder, you can basically set once and forget. Period.

GetResponse allows us to set the number of days interval, goals succeed etc before it triggers the next email. My trigger method is rather simple:

    • Welcome email (immediate)
    • Email containing free gift (1-7 days later)
    • Email follow up (1-7 days later)

    1. Select Messages > Create Autoresponder

    Setup autoresponder using GetResponse

    2. Choose the goals you wish to have for your autoresponder (some call this triggers). To set this demo, I selected the welcome email to have the settings below:

    • Time based – 0 day
    • Send message – Immediately
    • Days – Every day
    • Autoresponder name – Select a name for reference (example, welcome email)

Setting up different goals to trigger different autoresponder emails

    Setting up GetResponse autoresponder feature

    3. Select Create New Email and key in the relevant details. There are two options to track your emails; Click-through and Google Analytics. I recommend to turn them on.

    Analytics for autoresponder email

    4. The next part is relatively easy. This is where you can build your own template or use a predefined one by GetResponse. Once you have chosen the right template, press Use Template.

    5. The image below is your standard GetResponse visual editor.

    GetResponse visual editor feature
Does this email template look pretty?

On the right side of the screen, you will have options to build your email template.

There are options to save the template as Draft or for future usage.

Once you have completed the template, you can select Test message by sending a sample email to yourself or test with over a dozen different displays and as well as selecting Mobile preview only.

    6. Now, all you have to do is to click on the Next Step and you will have the option to Publish the autoresponder.

Building additional autoresponder is easy by repeating the same steps above. The only thing you need to do is to change the goals or triggers to put everything in place.

How to send email using GetResponse?

It is extremely to build a newsletter with GetResponse. There are two ways you can do so which are Message > Create Newsletter or by clicking the huge green button on the dashboard.

    Create email newsletter using GetResponse

    1. Once you click on either one of the links, it will bring you to the page as seen below. Remember to choose the right campaign or else, you will be building a newsletter for a different audience or recipients.

By default, you would have two options; using New Email Creator or HTML Source Editor. Personally, I would go with the first option as it is a drag and drop feature by GetResponse.

Have you tried GetResponse HTML editor?

    2. The next page would be pretty similar with the autoresponder setting page. The only difference would be the ability to have social share and A/B testing.

You can integrate multiple Facebook and Twitter accounts with GetResponse. This means that whenever you send out an email newsletter, it goes live on social media too.

With A/B testing, you can do various case studies on the types of colour, fonts and even words which could affect the open and conversion rate of the email.

    Social share and AB testing

    3. After you have configured your newsletter, it is time to head over to the sending option (visible after you press Next step). The below will be the display you will be seeing.

    GetResponse multiple sending options

On this page, you will be able to choose who will be receiving the newsletters. Generally, the options would consist of:

    • Campaign selection
    • Saved searches (if you have search anything previously)
    • Excluding option

You would also have the option to choose the contacts you want manually and this feature will automatically be enabled if you have selected to exclude at least one of your available campaigns.

    Manually selecting contacts

Important note: A campaign will only be shown or visible if there is at least one subscriber in it.

    4. The next screen will show you a summary of the newsletter you had just created. Here, you would have the option to either send the newsletter out immediately (choose Send Now) or schedule it at some other time (choose Schedule).

GetResponse Time Travel feature would mean that you have the ability to send out the particular newsletter accordingly to the recipient’s time.

The below is the example of the screen done on my demo campaign.

What is GetResponse Time Travel feature?

As you can see above, the map shows the number of of recipients according to their location. Anything in blue would means that it is possible to send and anything in orange colour would mean that the time had past the current time at that specific location.

All you need to do is to select the time and press Send.

How to setup RSS to Email on GetResponse?

For Internet Marketers, RSS to email is probably the best thing that ever happened to them. This feature enables you to send newsletters according to:

    • Time of publish
    • Number of posts

RSS to email would only work if you have a working RSS feed for your website. If you don’t have one, you can get one using FeedBurner.

    1. Setting up RSS to email on GetResponse is rather easy. All you need to do is to fill up the following columns in the image below.

    GetResponse RSS to email settings
How do you setup RSS to email on GetResponse?

    2. There are two frequency settings you can choose from:

    • Every time a new RSS article is posted
    • Send regular digest

The first option is pretty clear cut but the second one, would require a little setting. It means that you can select the exact time and date the newsletter is sent out.

    RSS to email settings
Pay extra attention to the red arrows

There are filters which you can use such as:

    • Recent
    • Engaged
    • Shared
    • Commented

Those simply means that a newsletter would be send out at the given time when either one of the goals above is triggered. By default, it would be Recent and thus, this means that GetResponse will send newsletter containing your latest blog post.

    3. The tricky part about setting up RSS to email on GetResponse (or any email marketing provider in this case) is the fact that the information in the newsletter are actioned according to codes.

Here are the common RSS to email codes used by GetResponse:

[[rss_title]] – inserts title of your RSS

[[rssitem_title]] – inserts title of your post

    [[rssitem_author]] – inserts author’s name

[[rssitem_content]] – inserts content of the blog post

[[rssitem_image]] – inserts link to image added to the post

[[rss_url]] – inserts url address of your post

    [[rss_description]] – inserts RSS description

[[rssitem_comments]] – inserts amount of comments

    Codes to personalize GetResponse newsletters:

    [[firstname]] – displays contact’s firstname

    [[name]] – displays contact’s name

    [[lastname]] – displays contact’s lastname

[[email]] – displays contact’s email address

[[responder]] – displays the campaign name

    [[ip_address]] – displays contact’s IP address

[[my_name]] – displays your from field name

[[my_email]] – displays your from field email address

[[remove]] or [[change]]- display the link for unsubscribing and updating details

[[view]] – displays the link to on-line version of your message

[[forward]] – displays link to forward the message to a friend

[[facebook]] [[twitter]] [[linkedin]] [[pinterest]] [[googleplus]]- insert social sharing links that make it easy for your subscribers to share the email with their friends

[[geo country]] [[geo country code]] [[geo region]] [[geo postal]] and [[geo postal code]] – insert geo-location data based on your subscriber’s IP address. Please note that this may not always be accurate due to how some ISPs are configured.

[[favoritecolor]] – prints the value of the ‘favoritecolor’ custom field.

[[shoesize]] – inserts the value of the ‘shoesize’ custom field.

    Don’t freak out!

When I first discovered them, I nearly fainted (to be honest). Basically, there are only 3 codes you ever need to create a successful RSS to email newsletter as below:

    [[rss_start]]

    [[rssitem_url]]

    [[rss_stop]]

    Amazingly short right?

Let’s say you are feeling a little adventurous and want to customize your GetResponse RSS to Email feature, here are the common RSS tags you can/should be using:

[[rss_title]] – Title of the RSS Feed

[[rss_url]] – URL of RSS Feed

[[rss_description]] – Description of Feed, if provided

[[rss_date]] – Publish date of Feed

    [[rss_start]] – Begin RSS block

[[rssitem_title]] – Title of RSS Item

[[rssitem_url]] – URL of RSS Item

[[rssitem_content]] – Content of RSS Item

[[rssitem_description]] – Description of RSS Item

[[rssitem_image]] – First image found in Description

[[rssitem_date]] – Publish date of RSS Item

[[rssitem_author]] – Author of RSS item, if provided

    [[rssitem_tweets]] – Number of Tweets

[[rssitem_likes]] – Number of Facebook likes

[[rssitem_comments]] – Comments on the RSS Item

[[rssitem_comments_url]] – URL for comments, if provided

[[rss_stop]] – End of RSS block

And if you are a visual type of person, here’s an example taken directly from GetResponse.

  • Build Leads And Email Contact List Using Lead Converter

Build Leads And Email Contact List Using Lead Converter

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. Running a business can be challenging, and it takes hard work and perseverance to achieve a high level of success. And that is not the only challenge you are going to face. In today’s competitive world of Internet Marketing, building an email contact list is more important than ever.

The bottom line is clear; If you are not building an email list, then you are definitely going to fail. Period.

You may place the multiple call to action banners but you are still not able to convert your visitors into followers … the one that subscribe to your email and newsletter. Continue reading and I will share with you one trick that could potentially double or even triple your sign up email sign up rates.

For the record, I am a huge fan of pop ups and it is a know fact that pop up helps to increase your sign up rate. Personally, I consider it as an intrusive but effective marketing tactic. I received a number of emails and even social shouts that at times, my pop ups aren’t working proper and this is really annoying for readers.

It didn’t took me long before I decided to remove the pop up but just like any other greedy marketers out there, I decided that I got to do something about it. I need to cut or reduce any potential loses.

Generating lead and email contact list building strategy

I have been a huge fan of Neil Patel and I came across this article, How to Convert Blog Readers Into Customers which is great. Neil listed several highly effective call to action methods which are great but I wanted to think out of the box.

And so I thought, “Hey, if I am able to make my readers interact with me, I would stand a higher chance to encourage them to sign up for my newsletter!”

I decided to scout through the list of Internet Marketing tools I have experience with and decided to stick to one that I had been using for some time now; Lead Converter.

Building email contact list using Lead Converter

Build email contact list using Lead Converter
    What is Lead Converter?

Lead Converter is a great marketing tool as it offers analytics, widgets and engagement tools. The analytic works exactly like Google Analytics while widgets allows you to build specific widgets to automatically show up on your site which I will explain shortly. Lastly, engagement tool is a feature where it allows live chat with your visitors.

Want to know more about Lead Converter? Sign up for free here!

Lead Converter allows you to build many engagement strategies using the widget options such as:

    • Top bar (alternative to the famous Hello Bar)
    • Questions and answers pop up boxes
    • Discount offer boxes
    • Survey options
    • Lightbox
    • InPageBox
    • eBook option
    • Yes/No question boxes

And yes, you are right. 8 different type of engagement options which you can integrate when it comes to building an email list.

Note: Widgets in Lead Converter is not the same with widgets on WordPress.

I decided to use only one which is the ‘Yes/No question‘. Basically, a small box will pop up on the bottom right of the page within 2-3 seconds after the page load.

    Here’s the text I used:

You seem interested in reading my blog post. Would you like to sign up for my FREE newsletter?

    > Yes [Please key in your email]

    > No [Tell me what to improve]

Using Lead Converter to increase visitor's engagement and generate leads
This is how I engage with visitors on my blog

As you can see, I started a simple conversation and then emphasized on the word ‘FREE’ with capital letters. To further increase the effectiveness of this method, I gave my visitors a ‘yes-no’ choice and even ask for feedback.

Now tell me, how many birds did I kill with this method?

I got my first feedback within an hour and I was getting around 5 feedbacks out of an average of 500 visitors on a daily basis. Out of every 5 feedbacks I get, half of them would actually signup for my newsletter. This proves that I would have around 0.5% success to get a new subscriber.

The conversion rate is low (call me greedy) but I get additional feedback daily and I started to understand what my readers are looking for and what they are expecting! For the visitors, they are happy as they felt their view points are taken into consideration.

What did I learn from this email marketing strategy?

    1. Making small conversation before even convincing visitors to sign up for mailing list works like charm
    2. Express your willingness to listen to their feedbacks is a huge plus point

    Generating leads (indirectly)

I am not sure if you are aware on this but Lead Converter is a great tool to generate leads.

Do you need me to remind you the importance of creating good leads? I bet you know that already!

Imagine changing the ‘asking feedback’ to a more specific question such as “will you buy this” or “will you recommend this product to your friends” to name a few. The sky is basically the only limit if you are a real imaginator.

Lead Converter comes with a live chat feature which is an absolute must have for any marketer and the ability to chat  with any of your visitors at any time during their visit to your site is a killer move.

Now, here’s a food for thought moment.

From the above, how far has your imagination brought you to? Tell me using the comment form below!

What are issues I came across when I am using Lead Converter?

Firstly, Lead Converter takes up approximately 4 HTTP requests per visitor’s impression. Even though 4 requests might be small, it could still affect your website loading speed. Through my experience using Lead Converter for some time now, there are times where each of these HTTP requests are slow to respond.

Secondly, the free Lead Converter account comes with just 50 clicks per month. This means that even thought I have a good email marketing strategy, the limitation is and will affect my results. The figures are calculated based on the number of engagements instead of impressions.

If you are deciding to use Lead Converter, I would highly recommend it. However, bear in mind that when you hit the limit, the widget option will automatically be disabled until the next cycle. For a new blog, I would say 50 clicks of engagement could be relatively enough but again, that’s just what I think. You could easily have a more engaging audience … so to say!

Bonus Tip – AWeber as alternative in building email list

With the limited clicks offered, I got to change my game plan and AWeber is my next option. Even though AWeber do not have a diverse option like what Lead Converter has, I could still leverage from AWeber with their Lightbox feature.

Now, make no mistake as Lightbox is often considered as a pop up. I know many readers hate pop ups but with such a great conversion rate, is it really worth using it?

For me, it wasn’t really an option as my Lead Converter quota usually hit the max even before reaching middle of the month and therefore, it was a no brainer for me to utilize AWeber to the maximum.

With proper configurations, AWeber inbuilt forms are great alternative to Lead Converter. From the point of view of a webmaster, building an email list with AWeber could be a better choice as it has lower HTTP request.

Pro tip: Setting the timer to for the pop up form to be visible is a great deal when it comes to building an email list.

Do you think this email contact list building will work?

My readers usually asked me why I am always trying on new strategy and plans. In this competitive business world, there isn’t any space for slack and if you want to be successful, you got to start getting out of your safe zone.

These email marketing strategy worked very well for me and my blog. How about you? Do you have any other strategy you would like to share with me? Tell me using the comment form below!

  • 6 No Brainer Reasons Why AWeber Is The Best Email Marketing Service

6 No Brainer Reasons Why AWeber Is The Best Email Marketing Service

You probably have heard me saying this a few times now, “You need a mailing list even if you are a blogger” and I will repeat if I got to.

A mailing list is extremely important especially when you are trying to build an audience and creating not only website traffic but a very sustainable one instead.

A good mailing list is important for both novice and professional bloggers as it will help to:

    • Increase the number of return visitors
    • Keep loyal readers updated with important updates and information
    • As a medium to communicate with your loyal followers
    • And probably a dozen more

We all know how hard it is to build a great mailing list and there is obviously no reasons why you need to make the process even harder. Setting up multiple signup forms and email autoresponders could indeed be a very tedious job. Therefore, choosing the right email marketing solution is a must!

Still not convinced? Take a look at these slides on the importance of a mailing list.

By now, you should have probably hear about AWeber from either your friends or on the net. Some call AWeber the best email marketing solutions and honestly, I really think so!

In this blog post, I will be sharing with you some reasons why I rather use AWeber compared to any other email marketing solutions out there.

Before that, let’s see what AWeber really is, shall we?

*p/s There’s also a video at the bottom of this post to show you how AWeber really works.

What are the features AWeber are offering?

AWeber is an email marketing software and autoresponder tool that is easy to configure and use.

What makes AWeber so popular is the fact that it is highly affordable and with the price tag of $16.17 per month, you might think that I am out of my mind.

At least, I would definitely have something under my sleeves right?

When you signup for AWeber (click here to signup for $1 for the first month as trial plus a 30 days money back guarantee), you are not only paying for their services but as well as the rich email marketing features.

And, I believe ‘rich’ could be a very understatement of the day!

Here are a complete list of what AWeber is offering to all its members:

    1. Ability to create custom professional email newsletters within minutes
    2. Multiple ready-made signup forms available to use instantly
    3. Segmenting subscribers to different categories for easier management
    4. Automatically deliver sequence messages to new subscribers according to date and time of your choice (autoresponder)
    5. Over 600 beautiful HTML email templates to create great looking emails
    6. Ability to perform split testing in anyway possible (title, names, colour, Call-To-Action etc)
    7. RSS to email ability – Automatically create emails from your newest blog posts
    8. Email analytics to track on number of clicks, opens and delete
    9. Easy to integrate to popular WordPress mailing list plugins such as OptinSkin and Hybrid Connect
    10. Extremely high email delivery rate thanks to the Anti-Spam policy
    11. 24/7 customer support through phone and email
    12. A wide variety of free training and guides for bloggers to build more subscribers
    13. Free access to live webinars for mailing list building strategies

I got to admit this; When I first saw the features, I was like “Okay, this sounds like the right email marketing solution for me” but I wasn’t sure if I should get it.

The price tag of $16.17 per month does sounds a little pricey for me (I bet you are thinking of that right now too!).

So, what really makes me use AWeber?

AWeber autoresponder is one of the best email marketing provider for bloggers

    1. The $1 deal for the first month trial and a 30-days money back guarantee is a no-brainer for me

Yup, you hear me right. The $1 deal is too good for me to say no to. Go ask around and many bloggers will tell you that they are using AWeber for their email marketing.

I am sure that if I wouldn’t like it, I could just hit the refund button. Furthermore, it’s just $1 right?

If that $1 doesn’t convince you, here are a list of famous using Aweber email services:

Now, tell me if you are convinced enough to try on AWeber right now 🙂

    2. AWeber email marketing tool comes with autoresponder ability

If you have no idea what autoresponder means, I would be delighted to share with you.

Autoresponder is a feature where you can set a sequence to send emails (within a specific time frame) for every ‘trigger value’.

For example, you can set the autoresponder to send a welcome email to all new subscribers after one day of signing up for your newsletter.

Isn’t this cool? Basically, you don’t have to type a new welcome email numerous times every time a person signs up. And, you don’t even have to copy and paste the scripts as well.

Here’s a video of the autoresponder feature on AWeber:

    3. Professional signup forms and templates

Creating a professional mailing list form is easy with AWeber. All you need to do is:

    • Choose a template or design as the base of your email
    • Choose the colours, fonts and even words to make your signup form more ‘lively’
    • Select any redirection such as to a thank you page or back to the current page
    • Copy the codes and place them on your blog
AWeber allows users to create beautiful HTML email templates to wow their future followers
You can easily produce beautiful email templates with the help of AWeber

    4. Easy integration with nearly all WordPress mailing list plugins

I don’t call myself a ‘techie’ and thus, I love to have things simple and straight forward. This is where I rather use AWeber as my email marketing provider since it is extremely easy to use.

Upon completing a custom design, you can choose to either:

    • Install the codes personally
    • Send to your web designer to do it for you
    • Or asking AWeber to host the form for you

For example, I am using Hybrid Connect and I could easily integrate AWeber codes with it and build my followers close to immediately.

As for the record, I tried both FeedBurner and MailChimp email marketing solutions before using AWeber and to be very honest with you, I felt that AWeber is the best email marketing tool especially when it is so easy to integrate it.

    Well, at least for me!

    5. Detailed analysis for your newsletters and followers

AWeber is an email marketing service that focuses in email analytics
With the simple but detailed dashboard, AWeber users are able to easily analysis their email strategy to increase click and open rates.

For those analytics lovers out there, this is probably the best feature AWeber can ever offer. On the dashboard, you are able to see simple yet complete report at one glance.

This means that you are able to see the number of new subscribers, scheduled broadcasts and even broadcast history on email clicks and opens.

Not only that, AWeber offers a very indepth information on the report tab which I will show you in a video shortly below.

    6. RSS to email

Simple RSS to Email by AWeber Communications

Honestly, I am not a fan of automated stuffs and recently, my buddy Gilbert asked me why I didn’t use this godly feature.

I told him that I rather have something ‘not automated’ for my mailing list but that question really struck my mind.

Email Campaign: How I Build My Email List From Scratch

Email list is more than just a list. In fact, it is the black book for nearly every successful marketer, blogger and companies alike.

Don’t worry if you have not started anything at all.

This article will explain to you important things about starting an email campaign … opps, I mean building a successful mailing list.

That’s why you’re here right? With so many email marketing guides out there, I want to make sure that the time spend on this article (expected to be 10 minutes or less), would provide you guidance which will prove useful not only today, but for the coming years.

Do you know what is email campaign and the importance of it?

There are several reasons why you should start building an email list right now. You may use the list to:

    • Grow your website traffic
    • Keep your readers informed on the latest posts and news
    • Increase the number of returned visitors
    • Boost your sales pitch and revenue earning (marketing)
    • Promote brand awareness
    • Get involved and get in touch with your loyal readers

There’s probably tons of other advantages that you can gain just by having an email list but you get the point. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in … you need a list.

You see, it doesn’t matter what’s your intention is … either to boost traffic or doing affiliate marketing. You need a god damn email list! 🙂

Three Easy Ways To Build An Email List … My Way

I know there are probably many ways to do this but these are the three, very easy methods to grow your email list. Yes … you can start building your mailing list with just $1.

When I started this website, I was like you … you know, wanting to grow my traffic and get my visitors back for more. The only way is to build more loyal readers who trust and have faith in me.

Creating an email list from scratch is hard and no easy task. Hopefully by the time you finish implementing these three methods, you’ll be able to gain good and stable moment of subscription rate.

Hold on a second now. Do you know how an opt-in form works? Not? No frust! The below an example of my opt-in form. Just enter your email and try it out! Yes it is absolutely free and if you dislike it, just hit the unsubscribe!

Method #1: Choose your email marketing provider

I’m not talking about Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook guys. I’m talking of auto responders, scheduling email blasts and managing your subscribers list. Most importantly, a program or service which could help me build my successful email campaigns.

There are probably tons of email marketing providers out there to choose from; from freemium to more than just affordable subscriptions.

Basically, these features are a must in any email marketing provider:

    • Ability to create signup or opt-in forms
    • Easy to embedded in any form (HTML, codes etc)
    • Manageable subscriber lists
    • Auto responders
    • RSS subscriptions
    • Spam control

If you have yet to start creating any email list, then I would highly recommend you to start now using Aweber. Here’s why:

    Try AWeber’s Autoresponders for $1

Method 2: Split testing your subscription forms (must … must have feature!)

This is important guys. Most of us are attracted to colours and the same concept goes to subscription forms. If placing just one form on the same spot will not increase your signup rate, then you should be doing more split testing.

So what is split testing actually?

Split testing is also know as A/B testing. Let’s say you in a course of one month, you created one signup form to be placed on your sidebar. And, you aren’t getting any signup at all! So, what’s wrong?

Could it be the colour, text or even the size? Fact is, we would probably not know the real reason behind this.

    BUT …

It doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything about it! You can perform tests and more experiment to determine which signup forms offer the best click through rate (CTR) and which isn’t.

If you have the thought that those are crazy, time consuming and it takes a lot of patience to do it, yes you are definitely right. Duh! Imagine how much time you got to spend on this split testing.

There is where Hybrid Connect comes in. Hybrid what?

Hybrid Connect is an advance mailing list building plugin for WordPress created by the famous Shane Melaugh. Well, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how he is. What you need to know is the plugin is more than just plain awesome.

Basically, Hybrid Connect is about customization, improve your call to action ‘projects’ and ensuring that you are maximizing every possible chance to build email list. What?

Hybrid Connect is not like any other WordPress plugin when it comes to building email list. It does more than just that!

Here’s what it looks like on my admin panel:

Hybrid Connect is an advance email mailing list plugin for WordPress
Hybrid Connect allows me to build specific opt-in forms for different pages and post.

And this is what Hybrid Connect can do for you.

    You can choose from:

    • Shortcode – Place any opt-in form anywhere in your content
    • Widget – Add any opt-in form to the sidebar or any other widget area
    • Light boxes – Create pop up opt-in form features
    • Slide in boxes – Allow forms to slide in from the bottom, side or top of the page or post
    • Squeeze pages – Create high-converting squeeze pages for sales boost
    • Comment list building – Option to opt-in with one click, when they leave a comment

If you want to know what Hybrid Connect is all about, this site explains it all.

I’m not saying that Hybrid Connect is the best out there. But for me, it works absolutely well and I see no reason why it won’t work for you … plus I love their support team who is always willing to help out.

Lesson learned? Always test and try out different forms to improve your sign up rates. Heard about “don’t put all your eggs in one basket?”

Method #3: Maximizing your click through rate (CTR) of your opt-in forms

You may use Hybrid Connect and a dozen more email list building software but you won’t be going anywhere if you are not getting any clicks.

To get your readers signing up for either a product sale or a simple newsletter, you got to make your opt-in form visible. Yes, make your call-to-action as attractive as possible. Here are some spots which works perfectly well to increase your CTR:

    • Featured area (before content)
    • Sidebar area (top or bottom most)
    • After content area (some call it after post)
    • Footer area
    • Floating or pop up opt-in form

Personally, if you want to increase your sign up rate, you should place your opt-in form on the top most of the article … place it right before the title area. I call it, featured widget.

Placing featured call to action widget could easily grow email list
This is one of my featured opt-in call to action.

    Why?

When I first started my website, I had only a few signups per week. If you ask me, that isn’t making the cut. Not even close! After placing a featured opt-in form for just one week, my CTR increase by 15% on average. Yes, imagine for every 100 visitors I get, I would get about 15 signups. Since I’m using Aweber, I know they are absolutely legit and that’s great!

Now this is my sign up graph or stats.

    Stats
My sign up stats increased drastically right after I place an opt-in form on my featured area

As you can see above, I wasn’t getting any healthy sign up rate. I would get probably 2 a day at most and sometime zero. With a call to action widget placed on the most visible part of the website, everything changes. I would let the stats above speak for itself.

From featured area to sidebar. Yes! You need to place at least one sidebar opt-in form on your sidebar if you want to grow your email list. When it comes to opt-in on side bar, you got to make it precise and short because you have very limited space to work with. So keep that in mind!

Basically, after post and footer opt-in forms are pretty normal and I wouldn’t into detail on that. However, I want to shift your attention now to the importance of having a pop up opt-in form.

Fact: You can increase your email list with pop up opt-in forms but …

Now, tell me this. Does the above question makes you wonder?

I hate pop up and I bet most of you do. So, making pop up opt-in form is tough especially when you do not want to drive your readers away.

A few things to consider are:

    • How often does the pop up will appear?
    • What type of pop up opt-in form to use? Complex or simple?
    • Does your readers get to view the pop up every time they head to a new page?

As I said above, pop up is very annoying and therefore, handle with care. My pop up will show be visible after my reader is on that page for a specific time and I love going simple but eye catching opt-in forms. And to add a little bit of twist, I set cookie where the same reader will only see the pop up once every 7 days.

Again, what works for me might not work for you. So, do some testing first before anything else.

If you are still having doubts whether you should start an email list or not, you definitely need to spend 5 minutes watching these slides.

    Back to you

I was lucky to speak to some bloggers last week and I realized some of them have yet to start building email list for their blogs and websites. I started pretty late but I’m sure, it is never too late for anything.

Do you see the advantages when it comes to building a strong relationship with your readers?

All in all, email list is very important especially when you are thinking of increasing your traffic and getting your loyal readers coming back for more. Not to forget, having an email list is also a great way to communicate with your followers.

You need to do this right now:

    What is MailChimp (or ChimpMail)?

MailChimp has came a long way and over the years, it had it shares of improvements done to email marketing. MailChimp is currently the market leader for free email marketing solution. Here’s what MailChimp looks like in the past. mailchimp reviewmailchimp reviewmailchimp review It’s bloody old school to say the very least!  Those days, the tagline for MailChimp is “Send Better Emails” and now, the latest MailChimp tagline is “Marketing Platform For Small Businesses.” While MailChimp may have changed its logo, branding and tagline, the same old MailChimp email marketing model (which are highly sought after) remains:
    • Forever free account for email marketing
    • Manage up to 2,000 email subscribers free
    • Send up to 12,000 emails per month for free
I know thousands of businesses around the world who stand by MailChimp when it comes to email marketing service. Even bloggers (both beginners and professionals) use MailChimp to manage their email lists! So, why is MailChimp such a popular email marketing service? I bet it has nothing to do with the chimpanzee who dressed up as a postal service previously. While I think that it is a great mascot as it serves a good balance between fun and work, the new mascot for MailChimp looks better and portrays quality. new MailChimp looksnew MailChimp looksnew MailChimp looks MailChimp got its name and fame by offering pretty much forever free email marketing solutions to those who need it. Small business owners, email marketers, bloggers and entrepreneurs use MailChimp because of the excellent pricing structures and of course, very good delivery rates. In short, MailChimp is an online email marketing solution to manage your contacts, send emails and track results. It offers forever free membership for the first 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails monthly. For me, forever free email marketing solution is very tempting and mouthwatering feature especially when you are new in blogging or Internet marketing industry. We are always trying to grow our mailing list and if you are just starting a new venture, you wouldn’t want to spend $20 to $100 a month for premium email marketing services. Hey, I get it … I’ve been there myself! When I first started Marketing Lancers (digital marketing agency in Malaysia), the entire company’s was going on lean marketing/setup. Minimum staffs and leveraging as many free tools as possible to reduce the overall cost. With the very interactive user interface, excellent back-end dashboard and forever free MailChimp email marketing services, your email marketing problem is solved, right? Well, I wished that was the case but it isn’t. There are some MailChimp weaknesses and disadvantages which you should be well aware off, or else they are going to bite you where it hurts the most (destroying your email list). Carry on reading to learn more about MailChimp email marketing solution. BONUS: If you want to learn how to use MailChimp effectively, here’s an awesome guide for you. The Complete Guide In Using MailChimp Email Marketing Solution (Step By Step Guide).

    1. No affiliate marketing with MailChimp

The single biggest problem with MailChimp email marketing solution is their legal policies. MailChimp legal policies is pretty strict especially for many bloggers and work from home Internet marketers. Why? I got this shot from the main website (source below).

    Prohibited Content on MailChimp

Please don’t use MailChimp to send anything offensive, to promote anything illegal, or to harass anyone. You may not send:
    • Pornography or other sexually explicit emails
    • Email offering to sell illegal goods or services
    • Emails that violate CAN-SPAM Laws
    • Alternate Comment TimesMarketing or commercial email with permission
Some industries have higher-than-normal abuse complaints, which can in turn jeopardize the deliverability of our entire system. Nothing personal, but in order to maintain the highest delivery rates possible for all our customers, we can’t allow businesses that offer these types of services, products, or content:
    • Escort and dating services
    • Pharmaceutical products
    • Work from home, make money on online, and lead generation opportunities
    • Alternate Comment TimesOnline trading, day trading tips, or stock market-related content
    • Alternate Comment TimesMulti-level marketing
    • Alternate Comment TimesAffiliate marketing
    • Alternate Comment TimesCredit repair and get out of debt opportunities
    • Alternate Comment TimesMortgages and loans
    • Alternate Comment TimesNutritional, herbal, and vitamin supplements
    • Alternate Comment TimesAdult novelty items or references
    • Alternate Comment TimesList brokers or list rental services
If you send this sort of content, most email services providers won’t be able to help you. You might want to look into setting up your own mail server. MailChimp’s Delivery Guide explains how that works. Source: MailChimp Whoa, whoa, whoa! Are you blown? For the benefit of the doubt, I understand that MailChimp wants to protect its delivery rate but do you agree that MailChimp terms is not even an advantage to consider for online marketers and bloggers? I was made aware thanks to Adrian and you can read it all here (comment section). Personally, I wouldn’t mind the first few disadvantages but not allowing affiliate marketing is definitely the stop point for me. As a professional and seasoned affiliate marketer, using MailChimp email marketing solution means that I’m at risk of losing my whole email list and more importantly, going to impact my affiliate earnings severely! I could be wrong but Internet marketing is either selling/promoting products (affiliate marketing) or creating some sort of lead generation for business. Editor’s Note If you are in the affilaite marketing niche like I do, I recommend you to understand the terms and conditions of MailChimp before using it. MailChimp has the tendency to remove your account without any notice and this means that all your hard work will just go straight into the drain! When it comes to MailChimp abuse reports, the risk is high and you need to know that you are not allowed to promote any affiliate products (apart from your own) using MailChimp.

    2. MailChimp pricing structure is misleading

This MailChimp review is not complete without talking about the MailChimp pricing structure. MailChimp pricing structure is really bad. Take a look at both of these screenshots. MailChimp PricingMailChimp Pricing Basic pricing structure MailChimp 2000 SubscribersMailChimp 2000 Subscribers When you have more than 2,000 subscribers For me, the MailChimp email pricing structure is really misleading. Compare both the left and right side of the images. Let’s assume you are at 2,000 email subscribers and you are required to go for paid email marketing by MailChimp. You are no longer paying $10 but $30 for 2,000 email subscribers (up to 2,500 email subscribers). Do you see the big jump in pricing? That’s an additional of $20 on top of the base $10 per month! For bloggers, this is definitely not worth the money and effort. Sure, professional email marketers (even other blog posts) will say that when you have 2,000 email subscribers, you will be able to make sufficient money from your list. But, is that the real truth? For a fact, I know many bloggers and Internet marketers who have more than 2,000 email subscribers and not making a single cent from email marketing. If I’m putting myself in the shoes of new bloggers or low-income online marketers, MailChimp pricing is definitely one of the biggest disadvantages using MailChimp. Plus when include in the terms and conditions of not allowing affiliate marketing, it gets even worse! I will not be surprised the number of bloggers who have this question in mind, “How do I make money with email marketing with MailChimp?” Personally, I rather pay for AWeber anytime of the day compared to MailChimp based on the pricing structure (no offense, MailChimp).

    3. MailChimp support is bad

Based on industry standards, MailChimp has one of the worst support you can ever image. mailchimp supportmailchimp support If you are using MailChimp free account, support will only be given to you on the first 30 days via email only (refer above). Yes, I know EXACTLY what you are thinking. MailChimp Support EmailMailChimp Support Email It is rather safe to say that when you use MailChimp free account, there is absolutely NO support given and I can’t even imagine MailChimp has such feature. Sure the knowledge base for MailChimp is very detailed but in today’s business world, data suggests that customers see fast, friendly and consistent customer service as the gold standard.

    Should I still use MailChimp?

I think this is one important question to cover. MailChimp has many disadvantages but I still use MailChimp for some of my blogs and businesses. When it comes to email marketing, MailChimp is pretty awesome and has a very unique pricing model. If you are a small to medium sized business and doesn’t require much from an email marketing solution, MailChimp is an excellent choice. If mailing list is under 2,000 email subscribers and you are not willing to pay for an email marketing solution, this ChimpMail is worth the try. The most important factor when considering using MailChimp is that you are not opening in the industry or markets which they do not allow (refer to their terms above). MailChimp is just like any other email marketing solutions such as AWeber and Convertkit. It is common to have emails delivered via MailChimp going to spam. This happens! The problems (in most cases) don’t sit on MailChimp servers but most of the the time, the email domain that you used or the content in the email that triggers the spam filters. Here are some samples:
    • Using Gmail or Yahoo to send email
    • Having words like “free” and “sale” in the email body

    What’s your thought on MailChimp?

What do you think about MailChimp and all these issues? Again, this doesn’t prove or mean that MailChimp is bad choice for email marketing. I got to admit that the above sounds a little … biased … but I promise I’m not! Maybe, just a little frustrated as an avid Internet marketer myself. If you’re able to live with it (like the thousands who do), why not right? MailChimp offers:
    • Free and pay as you go (services)
    • Acceptable level of reliability (delivery)
    • Simple to use and intuitive dashboard/email marketing features
Personally, I would use MailChimp if I’m running a small blog or a non-business site. However, I would rather pay a little bit more to have a better service especially when it comes to business matters. Moreover, Internet marketing is all about the ‘list’ and without one, you are basically nothing. My only concern about MailChimp are their terms and MailChimp pay as you go mechanics which can be very expensive as you grow your email list. Are you convinced with what I have to say about MailChimp? If you are thinking that hey, MailChimp is free to sign up and no strings attached, go ahead and register your free account here. Moreover, you have nothing to lose, right? Now, what’s your take on this? Will MailChimp be able to restore confidence among its member? Hit the reply button below and tell me what you think. And if AWeber is not your cup of tea, here are 4 more MailChimp alternatives to start your email marketing campaigns today. Read here. • AWeber vs MailChimp – The Best Email Marketing Services

AWeber vs MailChimp – The Best Email Marketing Services

This article about email marketing services is dedicated to my blogger friend, Bren Lee from My Girly Parts who asked me about the differences between MailChimp and AWeber. So Bren, this is for you and hope you liked it.

You have probably heard about ‘money is in the list’ hundred of times now. If not, you better read this article not once … but twice.

Why? Because this is the most basic blogging 101 for beginners and professional bloggers alike!

    [/feature_box]

Did you noticed that there are those newsletter signup boxes on your favorite websites? Yes, now you got the point.

Before that, let’s take a quick look on what makes AWeber and MailChimp different using the slide below:

The importance of a mailing list

I am just keeping this short and sweet. You may have tons of traffic coming from search engines and referral traffic. However, do you know how to promote an article which has a super high rate of success?

Let’s take an instance that you have 100 subscribers. This means that you have at an average of 90 eager, ready to share and loyal readers who will read your writings. And, you may write something bad and they would probably still say you are good.

Talking from a point of an Internet marketer or emarketer, a mailing list means you are going to promote a products to people who are willing to listen and probably close a sale with them.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a blogger, copy writer or Internet marketer … you need a mailing list. I call it … the black book.

What to look for in an email marketing service provider?

There are many choices you can choose from nowadays which consist of both free and paid ones. As for the record (as of now), I do not have a huge subscribers list like what most bloggers have and I’m still trying to grow my list. If you want to join my list, you can signup here:

    [hcshort id=”22″]

I’m a tough customer and it would take me quite a lot of convinces before I actually try on an email marketing service. This are what I am expecting to get:

    1. Easy to use (UI, integration etc)
    2. Templates
    3. Scheduler
    4. Auto responder
    5. Anti spam features
    6. A/B testings
    7. Pricing

Now, let me tell you again. There are many choices when it comes to email marketing software and provider. After several research and reading lots of reviews, I decided to stick my head into both MailChimp and AWeber only. The rest doesn’t come close to what I what I want (more on that in a minute).

I got to stress that I realized there are so many marketing tactics used by both the email marketing companies above which, at times is very confusing. I hope this article will give a brighter and clearer explanation of what these are and what they can offer. Most importantly, what you can expect from them.

    MailChimp – Send Better Email

MailChimp offers excellent email marketing services with a low price
MailChimp offers limited email marketing services for free

I’m going to review MailChimp first since I came into contact with it earlier than others. Okay, I admit it … the word free kinda attracted me. Not only that, with over 100,000 die-hard supporters, I know that MailChimp is definitely a competitor in email marketing solutions.

What I really love about MailChimp?

    1. Clean, clear and fun UI to use
    2. Drag and drop functions
    3. Very direct and not complicated settings and control panels
    4. Free

    What I dislike about MailChimp?

    1. Free account offers limited features
    2. Several options could be unlocked only after you completed certain tasks
    3. You can add anyone immediately as subscribers without comfirmation

The first thing that attracted me to MailChimp (besides the bloody ‘free‘) is the user interface. It is basically very simple and is ideal for those who want to build a list fast. You can probably set up an email within 15 minutes. Maybe lesser if you know what you’re doing.

I am also tempted with MailChimp’s integration module. It’s signup form can be integrated easily into nearly any widget and plugins. Yes, a big turn on when it comes to ‘bye bye coding work’.

What I really don’t like about MailChimp is the fact that some important email marketing features are locked on free account (like A/B testing and auto responder). Of course, you can unlocked them by being more ‘active’ or doing more tasks before you are able to unlock them.

What I mean is … give me a break! If you want to offer something, offer them in full.

MailChimp is one of the best email marketing providers which offers free service
Example of MailChimp Mailing List which I had done to run my research

Another downside is that fact that you can basically add anyone into your subscriber’s list without their confirmation. This is not a good sign as you could easily be labelled as spam. You definitely don’t want when it comes to growing your mailing list.

I still love MailChimp and it’s simply because it is freemium. The free account offers a maximum of 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails (per month). Anything more is all pay per use which is pretty cool for me.

Important note (credits to Adrian Jock): Term and Condition changes on MailChimp which could affects you!

    MailChimp terms of use
MailChimp has a small clause that disallow specific businesses to use their services.

My verdict: You can grow your mailing list perfectly well with MailChimp. It is definitely a good choice for those who are tight on budget or even on a start up website. Since MailChimp offers a free email marketing service, I believe that it is a great platform to start it … of course, if you on the ‘allowed’ list as said by MailChimp.

AWeber – Email Marketing Software and Email Marketing Services

Aweber offers great flexibility and features when it comes to email marketing
AWeber is one of the most popular paid email marketing provider in the world

AWeber is a great email marketing service and yes, I am using AWeber. Even though I am using it, I will try my best to be as neutral as possible 🙂

AWeber is not free but I’m willing to pay for it? Why?!

    What I love about AWeber?

    1. Detailed dashboard (UI)
    2. Many options and features when creating mailing list
    3. Auto responder
    4. Excellent promo ($1 for the first month)

    What I dislikes about AWeber?

    1. Limited templates
    2. Not free!

I moved from MailChimp to AWeber simply because I wanted to try something new. And yes, it was recommended by my blogger friend, Adam Connell from Blogging Wizard. The $1 promo was more than just a deal for me. If I dislike it, I could just cancel the plan. Easy as that!

Aweber dashboard offers complete and excellent detailed email marketing report
This is how AWeber looks like on my test newsletter. A complete and detailed reporting tools at your finger tips.

The first impression when I login to AWeber dashboard was “What the hell had I done?”. Okay, the UI isn’t as clean as what MailChimp is. Just see the screenshots above. AWeber dashboard is … detailed!

Now, creating an email or auto responder (called as follow up message) in AWeber is no easy job. It’s simply because it is highly customizable. There’s a slight learning curve for setting up email on AWeber but once that job is done, you are going to rock it real hard!

Hint: check out the two newsletter signup forms on my sidebar. That’s what I’m talking about!

Once you have created a signup form, AWeber gives you the special placement ability to either grab the HTML code to place manually on your website, email the code to your web developer and even have AWeber to host the form for you. Pretty cool huh?

Doing A/B testing is also easy using AWeber. You can immediately it do it regardless how many subscribers you have. That makes all the difference when compared to MailChimp.

AWeber doesn’t allow you to add any subscribers to your list. You may send an email to invite them to your list and they would need to click on the confirmation link. This is absolutely great since you are also able to detect if they are just spam email or inactive followers. A huge +1 when it comes to spam control.

Talking about spam, AWeber will give you a spam score after you completely editing your email or newsletter. You know … some words are deem spam. The lower your score, the better the chance the email will avoid the junk box.

Lastly, what I dislike about AWeber is that it has very limited and ready-made templates. Okay, I know customization is the main topic here but for lazy people like me, customizing is time consuming. However, this is something I can live with since I customize all my emails and messages.

    AWeber vs MailChimp

I don’t think there is a clear winner in terms of functionality and features. You will not go wrong with either one of these email marketing providers. Trust me on that.

As a recap, here’s what I think about AWeber and MailChimp.

AWeber (Try now: Only $1 for the first month)

    • King of customization
    • Good report and analytic tools ready out of the box
    • Excellent spam control

MailChimp (Try now: Free for 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails)

    • Powerful email marketing tool if used properly (with some patience)
    • Very affordable when it comes to financial matters
